currency of trade in Japan. Weight could fluctuate depending on moisture content, so volume was a more accurate measure of quantity. A powerful man’s wealth might be measured in barrels of rice, and taxes paid accordingly with the Masu box.
Ohashi Ryoki have been manufacturing Masu boxes for generations and keeping the tradition alive by continually training young apprentices. The boxes are skilfully fabricated from incredibly fragrant Cyprus wood which is sustainably harvested from the thinning of local forest, using finger-joints so precise that they are watertight and often used for drinking sake.
Together we have designed a large collection of beautiful accessories for the home, focusing on the kitchen, the dining table, the desk and the bathroom. We have co-designed all of the products to be elegant, useful, but also versatile, leaving room for the individual to be creative with their use.
For over 60 years Ohashi Ryoki has been the leading manufacturer of traditional handcrafted Masu boxes in Ogaki, Japan. Over 80% of all Masu boxes produced are made in Ogaki city, which is located near a major manufacturing centre of Hinoki lumber. Made from excess lumber that comes out of thinning, the Masu boxes are entirely environmentally friendly. Wake up every day to a hint of fresh evergreens in the air and enjoy the crisp scent and smooth, soft touch of hand crafted Cyprus.
Inspired by the history of the Japanese Masu finger-jointed box originally used as measuring cups for rice and other grains, the Hinoki Storage collection offers a flexible range of interconnecting modular storage solutions for everyday life. All pieces are handmade from fast growing, environmentally ethical Hinoki softwood.
The collection includes storage solutions for the Kitchen and Desktop as well as a new bathroom storage range. Also new for 2019 is a collection of soft edge, sealable cases, ideal for carrying delicate items such as spectacles.
